Easy Watercolor Heart Stamp Valentine Cards for Kids

A super simple, low-prep Valentine activity that toddlers can genuinely do on their own (with a little setup from you). The stamping part is always a hit and the finished cards make the sweetest handmade Valentines for grandparents, neighbors, or classroom friends.

Activities like these watercolor heart stamping cards do more than just make cute valentines — they give kids space to explore, experiment, and build emerging skills, which is exactly why art activities are important for early childhood development.

Supplies Needed

What We Did

1. Cut and shape the heart stamp

We cut a toilet paper roll into a few smaller sections and squeezed each one into a heart shape. Once bent, the cardboard actually holds the heart shape surprisingly well.

2. Prepare the card base

We cut a heart shape out of printer paper to make a flat card, but you can also leave the paper whole and fold it later if you want a traditional greeting card instead (we did this also).

3. Mix up simple watercolor paint

In small bowls, we mixed water with a few drops of food coloring. My toddler helped choose colors (we used red and yellow) and loved adding the drops herself to make “paint.”

4. Stamp the heart shapes

My toddler dipped the cardboard heart stamp into the colored water and stamped hearts all over the paper. The outlines alone look cute, so it’s great for beginners or younger toddlers.

5. Fill in the hearts with watercolor

Once she finished stamping, she went back with a paint brush and filled in the heart shapes. It gave the whole card a sweet, watercolor look.

6. Let dry and decorate the inside

We set the cards aside to dry, then folded and decorated the insides with a simple Valentine’s Day message. It made the perfect little handmade Valentine to gift to family and friends.

Why We Loved It

This activity checked a lot of boxes for us — low prep, inexpensive, and just the right amount of messy. The stamping part gives younger kids a big confidence boost because it always turns out cute, and the painting/filling-in is great for fine motor control. Plus, homemade cards just hit differently when your toddler delivers them with pride.
